Owing
to the dry condition of Bennington four of our young men went to Calhoun
Monday evening and incidentally attended the dance at that place. They
certainly found the moisture in the form of a soaking rain and also a
frost. After
several weeks of limping around Rev. Brooks reports that he is again in
good walking trim and will put in an appearance at Bennington next
Sunday morning. Services at usual hours. The place will be announced
after his arrival. Quite
a little excitement was created Tuesday evening by a cry of robbers
being raised by Mrs. Cunningham. Hearing some kind of noise on the
stairway of her house and thinking of burglars she cried out for help
and in five minutes the entire population of the town was on the scene.
No one was seen entering or leaving the house and nothing was stolen. The
Fourth of July celebration under the auspices of citizens of Bennington
was complete success. Cloudy and threatening weather kept the crowd back
until a late hour in the afternoon. Although it was a wide open unsafe
and insane Fourth but few accidents were reported and those of trivial
character. One accident, which was the result of trying to be smart,
might have resulted seriously. After having some minor injuries dressed
by a physician Adolf Kurth fell off the curb in front of the drugstore,
dislocating his jaw and other wise cutting and bruising himself, which
put him entirely out of commission. Other than this the celebration
passed off very nicely. We are prepared to take subscriptions for the American Carpenter and Builder, Youths Companion(new), Omaha Daily News and Hicks weather almanac and magazine.
